People are moving away from social media for news

Our friends at the Reuters Institute released their latest Digital News Report, a fascinating research study about, well, news!

The research shows that people are moving off social media for news. They are turning toward private messaging apps to share and talk about news:

This is happening globally with some countries much further along this path than others.

The report looks at some of the reasons for the change. They found, unsurprisingly, that privacy is really important to people.

“Privacy is an important issue for users, and this partly explains the growth in use of messaging apps, as opposed to more open social networks.”
